THE construction of Karuma dam in Masindi district is to kick off in July.
The power plant, which is part of the Government’s plan to increase power supply and rural electrification, will produce 750 mega watts of power.
The acting Masindi LC5 boss, Wilfred Byakagaba, said on Wednesday the energy ministry had contracted Energy Infrastratech, a private company, to undertake an environmental impact assessment study where the project will be established.
He said the company, which had carried out a feasibility study, would also carry out the resettlement development plan of the project.
Byakagaba said ministry officials visited the district recently to collect information on the scope and prepare it to guide the social and environmental impact assessment study.
“Some of the equipment has been dispatched to the project site,†he said.
He explained that Energy Infrastratech is excavating the area where the tunnels will pass and establishing where the dam, penstalk and power house will be constructed.
Byakagaba said the dam would supply power to the western and northern parts of the country, and reduce power shortages.
He added that increased power supply would promote development and industrialisation in the country.
Karuma dam is contained in President Museveni’s manifesto of 2006.
Meanwhile, Buseruka dam in Hoima district is also expected to be completed in July.
The nine mega watt power plant will supply power to various parts of western region.
