CORAL Tree (erythrina variegata) is a genus (groups into which plants that have similar characteristics are divided) containing over 100 trees and shrubs.

It is a native of the Philippines Islands in Indonesia, although it can be found everywhere today. It has spiny trunks and branches. The E. Variegeta is the most common with three parted leaves and a deep yellow colour running along the veins.

After a prolonged draught, the leaves fall off and are followed by strikingly beautiful scarlet flowers. It is a spreading tree which may reach 15 metres in height.

Some Erythrina have solid green leaves. It may be grown as a street boundary or as a wind breaker. It may be used as an indoor plant for it offers so much character in its leaves.

It is drought resistant and requires full sun light. It is a recent entry onto our market and quickly getting famous in the nurseries.

Propagation is by large stem cuttings. Happy gardening!
