Dear Doctor, I am aged 28, with two children. I have never used any family planning method apart from condoms. However, my husband recently told me he is tired of using condoms. I would not be comfortable using any other family planning method apart from safe days. Please teach me how. Adrein
Dear Adrein, THERE are a number of things that you need to know about the use of safe days as a contraceptive method before you consider it. One important thing to note is that the method can only be attempted by women with a very regular cycle. It also requires a lot of commitment.
For women with a perfectly regular cycle of 28 days, the rather safe days are from day zero to eight and day 22 until the start of the next period.
Day one is the day that the periods start. However, it has also been scientifically proven that there are very few days of the menstrual cycle during which most women are not potentially capable of becoming pregnant.
Even with a regular cycle, there is a one to six chance of fertility even on the day of the next period. This generally means that the method may not be very effective.
I am not quite sure why you are hesitant about using other methods of contraception, but a good contraception counselling sessions may help to allay some of your fears and concerns.
There are a number of other methods that you can use which, are relatively safe and effective.
