NINE pupils of Igeyero Primary School in Waitambogwe sub-county, Mayuge district, were on Monday injured after lightning struck their classroom.

The incident occurred during a drizzle that started when the P7 pupils were attending a social studies lesson.

There were over 60 pupils in the classroom at the time of the incident, according to their teacher, Moses Ebyagu.

The injured, some of them in shock, were rushed to the nearby Iganga Hospital for medical attention.
“There was a very bright light followed by a loud sound then screams from everywhere. That is when we realised some pupils had been struck,” Ebyagu narrated.

He identified those seriously injured as Dalaus Lugwire, Laston Waako and Aisha Isanga.

Those with slight injuries are Richard Ngobi, Bernard Kalewo, Bayati Kikazikibi, Jackson Tonta, Moses Kabikira and Irene Nabirye.

Julius Kabusera, the Iganga Hospital administrator, said the pupils had been admitted and were undergoing treatment.

“They are under close medical observation. But I believe some will be discharged soon,” he said.

Recently, one child was struck dead by lightning and four others injured during a heavy downpour in Bugongi village.

John Akankwasa, 12, had taken shelter in the family kitchen with his siblings.
