MAKERERE and other public universities have started admitting students for the academic year which starts in August.

A total of 189 diploma holders were yesterday admitted on the private sponsorship scheme for bachelor of education (external) at Makerere University.

According to the list, the majority of those admitted are diploma graduates of Kyambogo University. They are mainly teachers of arts subjects. The Government sponsors 4,000 students in public universities every year, 3,000 of whom are selected on academic merit.
Of these, 75% are admitted to science courses and 25% to arts and humanities.

The other 1,000 students are admitted on the district quota system.
A source said Makerere will admit 2,000, Kyambogo 800, Mbarara 400, Gulu 500, while Busitema will take 300.The council was likely to raise the cut-off points for A’level entrants, the source added.

For instance, at Makerere, the tentative cut-off points for bachelor of medicine is proposed to be 46.3, up from 44.7 last year, while bachelor of electrical engineering is 52.3, up from 51.4.

The tentative cut-off for bachelor of surveying, the source said, is 45.7, compared to 45.5 last year, while that of pharmacy reduced from last year’s 47.4.

The admissions board committee meets early next month to approve the cut off points and the admissions list.
