THE Electoral Commission has banned fundraising activities during the byelections due in Mukono North constituency.

A statement from the commission yesterday said this would allow a level ground for all the candidates in the race.
Commission boss Badru Kiggundu said the electoral programme for the byelection started on April 15.

It will also be the last date for registration of voters and transfer of voting locations.

The byelection will take place on May 25. The seat fell vacant after Democratic Party’s (DP) Betty Nambooze won a petition in the Supreme Court against NRM’s Peter Bakaluba.

In the 2006 parliamentary elections, Bakaluba defeated Nambooze by less than 500 votes.

Nambooze contested the results, claiming that Bakaluba had rigged the election. Six people have expressed interest in the constituency.

They are Bakaluba, 40, Nambooze, 40, the Mukono NRM publicity secretary, Moses Kasujja Kagodo, 38, retired Capt. Kato Walugembe, 50, an National Resistance Movement supporter, Moses Bakubi, 29, of the Forum for Democratic Change and Zirimala Kiggundu, 40, of Democratic Party.
