THE High Court in Luweero has sentenced a primary school teacher to 12 years imprisonment for defiling an eight-year-old pupil of a neighbouring school whom he waylaid while she was returning home after classes.

Judge Elizabeth Musoke on Monday convicted Juma Mivule, 38 of Kigombe Primary school in Luweero for aggravated defilement.

The prosecutor, Bernard Senteza had hoped for a maximum sentence of death to deter other potential offenders, but the culprit got 12 years, because of the mitigating factors.

The accuser’s counsel, Sowad Katamba pleaded for leniency, saying his client had shown remorse, been on remand for a long time and had a family to look after.

The prosecution told court that Mivule in October 2008 lured the minor who was returning from school into his house by promising to give her money.

Mivule then gave the victim sh100 and grabbed her and force her into sex ,after which he warned her not to tell anybody.

The judge said the accused deserved a deterrent punishment because the cases of defilement were on the increase.
