With an impressive line-up of local stand up comedians, the inaugural Comedy Nite at Club Silk last Thursday in Silk Lounge got off to a rousing start.

Fans who turned up were treated to a melange of crazy jokes, slapstick comedy and buffoonery, each character funnier than the previous one. They included Aleku, Jimmy, Afande Kelekele, Emcee Fish, Little Joedibbu, Lady Cotilda and Stickman.

Aleku’s mimicking of President Museveni was left everyone in stitches. Nzaire Kaguta, the President’s young brother who was in attendance, seemed to be the biggest fan of Aleku, excitedly shooting pictures of the humourist throughout his performance.

However, most of the skits were sexist, ridiculing women about the same old stuff we have heard time and again. There was also the problem of Luganda being the most used language, leaving out non-Luganda speakers.

Ironically, the English-speaking comedians did not seem to impress the audience much. Overall, the success of the show seemed to revolve around Jimmy, Afande Kelekele and Aleku.

The huge turn-out was great for the first night, but became a problem. There was little space or no space to move or stand comfortably. For subsequent shows, the organisers need to take note of this.
