BENEFICIARIES of the NAADS programme in Budhiope in Buyende district have been challenged to use the grants they get appropriately to attract bigger opportunities from the programme.

Charles Ocici, the executive director, said some beneficiaries misuse NAADS grants, but keep on asking for more. “If you want to qualify for a bigger gift, you must first make good use of the one goat you receive to create chances for you to get, say five heifers,” he advised.

Ocici was speaking at the end of a five-day business and enterprise start-up tool training in Budhiope county recently. The training attracted 1,347 participants. One of the participants testified that he had received 100 orange trees from NAADS, but because of his negative attitude, he neglected them, saying they were NAADS oranges.

Other beneficiaries said the lack of ownership of the programme by the locals and entrepreneurial skills contributed to the negative attitude. Stephen Kigozi, the chairman of the Bugaya Sub-county NAADS Farmers’ Organisation, hailed Rebecca Kadaga, the deputy speaker of Parliament and the area member of Parliament, and the district leadership for inviting Enterprise Uganda to train the farmers and youth of in the district.

He requested that the training be extended to all the sub-counties in the district so that many farmers who had received NAADS assistance can look after them better and improve their incomes to develop the new district.

With the support of the finance ministry, Enterprise Uganda plans to roll out the programme to other districts in the coming months.
