PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has directed the education ministry to construct a new secondary school in Lira district.

State minister Kamanda Bataringaya said the school will be established in Ongica parish in Adekokwok sub-county.

The move follows a memorandum to the minister by the residents who said the nearest government secondary school was 12km away.

“The President has directed the Ministry of Education to construct a secondary school here after Sam Engola, the Lira NRM chairman, contacted him,” Bataringaya said while touring the site on Monday.

He urged the residents to acquire a title for the school land. Leo Odongo, an official, said the institution will be named Iwal Secondary School.

He said Ongica parish, where the school will be constructed, has a population of 12,000 people.
Bataringaya later visited four other institutions.

They were DJRA Secondary and Vocational School, Canon Lawrence Primary Teachers’ College, King James Comprehensive School and Fountainhead Institute of Management and Technology.

He also officiated at an education symposium organised by Engola at St. Lira Hotel.
