THE Atiak-Nimule road is to be upgraded to tarmac. This follows the signing of a $34m (about sh68b) loan deal between the governments of Japan and Uganda, Dan Alinange, the roads agency, UNRA, spokesman, has said.
The project will be implemented together with the $68m World Bank-funded Gulu-Atiak-Nimule road, which will also be tarmacked.
Alinange said the World Bank funding was part of the transport sector development project, while the the 36km-Atiak-Nimule section will be funded by the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA).
He added that the procurement process for the project was already underway. Construction will start in October and be completed in three years.
The Gulu-Atiak-Nimule road forms a crucial regional link between Kampala and Juba in Southern Sudan, which is critical for trade and development of both countries.
The road also links Moyo, Adjumani and Amuru districts and connects Uganda and Southern Sudan to Mombasa port through the Tororo-Mbale-Soroti-Lira-Karuma-Gulu road corridor.
