Bwindi National Park twin gorilla dies

KATUNGI one of the baby male twins, living among the Nkuringo group of gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has died. He was one and half years.

KATUNGI one of the baby male twins, living among the Nkuringo group of gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has died. He was one and half years.

The gorilla twins, Katungi and his brother Muhoozi born to Kwetonda and Safari(father) turned one year on December 1st.

According to a report on Friend a Gorilla website “Katungi the male infant twin from the Nkuringo family is had been reported ill by the trackers earlier and was under observation till yesterday (April 26th) evening when the daily tracking team retreated for the evening.

On Tuesday morning, 27th April, when the advanced tracking rangers caught up with the Nkuringo family, she was missing. After a thorough check through the forest, he was discovered lying about fifty meters away from the family. He was on the ground motionless.”

According to the report, doctors from Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project and a team of trackers, “desperately attempted to revive the little unconscious gorilla. He responded by jerking once, she then and fell back on the ground and breathed his last.”

The actual cause of his death will be established after a post-mortem scheduled for today

The death shocked the entire Mountain Gorilla community, since it coincided with the second anniversary of the death of Katungi’s grandfather, Nkuringo, who died on April 27, 2008. Nkuringo one of the habituated group in Bwindi has 18 members.
