CHARLES Muhangi’s powerful Subaru Impreza N12 arrived in time for this weekend’s KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda rally but the driver cannot start it because he does not have the right fuel.

The car which the former African champion bought from Al Quassim, a wealthy driver in the Middle East, uses turbo-max aviation fuel which is not available on the Ugandan market.

Turbox-max is a modified and quicker type of fuel used by racing cars in developed countries.

A mechanic from a UK firm that constructs Subaru racing cars is expected in Kampala today to make the car compatible with the Avgas fuel.

“It will be sorted out in one day. A mechanic from Pro-drive will arrive here tomorrow (today) morning and probably by the end of the day everything will be alright,” Muhangi remarked.

“I am looking forward to getting the feel of the new machine.”

Al Quassim sold the car to Muhangi after competing in only three races.

The former African champion who won the Pearl rally in 1998 will race with experienced navigator Frank Nekusa.

The event that is the third round of the Africa Rally Championship has attracted 21 drivers from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Srutineering of cars will be conducted tomorrow at Shell Lugogo Bypass station from 7:00am.

Clerk of the course Stephen Byaruhanga yesterday briefed FIA observer John Anagnistopoulos from Greece on the technical aspects of the route.

After scrutineering, competitors will head to the KCB Bank, Oasis Mall branch for the ceremonial start. The cars will then head to Lubiri for the super special stage.
