JINJA district is to survey boundaries of land belonging to sub-counties in a bid to resolve conflicts between residents and leaders.

The LC5 chairman, Hannington Basakana, said the land will be surveyed to establish the size and number of occupants, before an amicable solution is found.

Speaking at Mafubira sub-county headquarters on Wednesday, Basakana said the district lacks information concerning land in sub-counties. Jinja district is made up of seven sub-counties.

“This is not the first time I am asking our lands department for information on sub-counties’ land, I will task them to go to the lands ministry and get it,” he said.

Basakana made the remarks following complaints from Mafubira leaders over encroachment on their land by residents, a situation they claimed had hindered development programmes.

He said he had received similar complaints from Kakira sub-county.
Basakana made the remarks during a three-day capacity building workshop on land ownership organised by slum women’s initiative for development, a non-governmental organisation.

The workshop was attended by local council leaders and members of the Practical Rural Women’s Association, one of the women’s groups supported by the organisation.

Director Joyce Nangobi said at least 10 women in Mafubira had acquired land through a revolving fund.

“We are facilitating a survey on their land and thereafter will construct houses,” Nangobi said.

She said 38 women in Walukuba division had acquired land, while 44 others were in the process of purchasing it.

Nangobi added that the organisation also provides children suffering from mental retardation with treatment and scholastic materials.
