RESIDENTS of Kibaale district have recommended the district be split into three to reduce political tension.

“If Kibaale could be split basing on counties, the tribalistic politics and divisionism would end,” Busia resident district commissioner Robinah Nabanja said.

She added that Kibaale would stabilise if Bugangaizi and Buyaga counties were given district status.

The recommendation was made during meetings at Bugangaizi and Buyaga on Thursday and Friday. The residents argued that Kibaale is too big to be served by one chairperson.
The Bugangaizi county MP, Marble Bakeine, said splitting the district would help Kibaale benefit from the Government sponsorship university scheme under the quota system.

“The number of students being admitted on the quota system is decreasing. We need to create as many districts as possible to benefit from such government programmes,” she said.

She added that if the district were split, the road network would be maintained and this would accelerate development.
“If we get three districts our farmers will be in position to transport their produce to markets very fast which is a recipe for development,” Bakeine said.

The district chairperson, George Namyaka, said the creation of new administrative units would enhance peaceful co-existence among the indigenous Banyoro and the Bafuruki in the area.
