Will I be admitted as a private student?
I scored EDOB in biology, agriculture, chemistry, foods and nutrition respectively and D2 in general paper. Will I be admitted as a private student for bachelor of science in human nutrition and dietetics (Kyambogo University) or bachelor of science in human nutrition at Makerere University?
Ken

Kyambogo University requires principal passes in food and nutrition and either biology or chemistry for admission to the bachelor of science in human nutrition and dietetics. Since you passed food and nutrition and biology, Dr. Andrew Cula, the Kyambogo academic registrar, says you are eligible. However, he says he cannot guarantee that you will be admitted on private sponsorship. Admission is determined by the number of applicants. The bachelor of science in human nutrition is not included on the list of courses that will be offered at Makerere in the coming academic year.
However, you are eligible for a bachelor of agribusiness management, and bachelor of science in horticulture at Makerere University.

How do I apply for an online course?
I sat for my UACE and I also did two certificate courses in information technology (IT). I would like to do a degree in IT. Are there any institutions that offer online courses? What are the procedures and when can one apply?
Brenda

The Makerere University faculty of computing and information technology (CIT) coordinates some online courses which are taught by Amity University of India.
The courses include bachelor of science in information technology, an ordinary diploma and post-graduate diploma (PGD) in IT.
Joseph Ssemwogerere, the faculty coordinator, says they are free, although the faculty charges operational fees. The faculty charges sh300,000 for an ordinary diploma, sh350,000 for the degree, and sh400,000 for the PGD per semester. Adverts for the next intake will be out this month. You could check out with other computer training institutions like APTECH on Entebbe Road and YMCA to find out if they offer online courses.

Can I enroll for a computer course after CCNA?
I did physics, chemistry and mathematics in A’level and I am currently pursuing a CCNA course. Can I enroll for telecom or computer engineering after this? If not, give me other options.
Kato

Dear Kato,
Your question is not quite clear, but the impression it gives is that you might have failed to score two principal passes at A’level. And so, you could not be admitted to university through the direct entry scheme. This could be the reason why you opted for CCNA. But CCNA is not a diploma-based course to allow you to be admitted through the diploma holders’ entry scheme. CCNA is regarded as a professional course in information technology but is not enough to secure you an admission. You can apply through the mature age entry scheme if you are 25 years and above.

How can I get a scholarship?
I hold a diploma in catering. How and where can I get a scholarship to pursue a degree in hotel management?
Raphael Omoding

There are 4,000 government scholarships available in public universities each year. However, since you are not a fresh A’level leaver, you are not eligible for the direct entry scheme. You can access scholarships if you apply through the diploma holders’ entry scheme or the mature age entry scheme. Besides, there are a number of non-governmental organisations and universities, both within and outside the country that give scholarships. These are mainly advertised in newspapers.

Do I qualify for a bachelor’s at Makerere University?
I sat for A’level and got only subsidiaries. But I studied a diploma in electrical engineering at the Uganda Technical College in Mbale. Do I qualify for a bachelor’s degree at Makerere University?
John
Dear John,
In Uganda, the National Council for Higher Education requires that each student must possess at least two principal passes in order to be admitted in any university. Since you scored only subsidiaries, you are ineligible for admission through the direct entry scheme, which is for A’level leavers.
However, Makerere has three avenues of admitting students. Alfred Namoah, the university academic registrar, advises that you apply through the diploma holders’ entry scheme. You could be admitted if you scored at least a second class or credit diploma. The second alternative is the mature age entry scheme, where 25 years of age is the minimum requirement for admission.
