ANDREW Kasagga Zzimwe, the business tycoon who passed away on Monday, was yesterday buried at Seeta in Mukono district.

Hundreds of mourners, among them senior army and government officials, thronged Ggwafu village, where he lived for over two decades.

Zzimwe, 63, died at about 8:00am before reaching Kampala International Hospital, where his family had rushed him on Monday. He had battled cancer of the pancreas for several years.

His body was laid to rest just about seven metres from his house on top of a serene hill overlooking Seeta town.
One of his daughters nearly collapsed on seeing the body being lowered into the grave.

“You showed us love and you have been our pillar,” she sobbed.

Government officials, among them Speaker Edward Ssekandi, NRM vice-chairman Moses Kigongo, finance minister Syda Bbumba and several MPs, eulogised the fallen tycoon as having supported the National Resistance Movement, while villagers remembered him for being a philanthropist.

Lt. Gen. Katumba Wamala, the commander of the land forces, applauded Zzimwe for constructing roads in northern Uganda even when the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency was at its peak.

The Vice-President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, in a speech read by Bbumba, commended him for contributing to the development of the country.

He offered sh2m to the bereaved family and advised the children to keep their father’s torch burning.

Kasagga was the founder of Zzimwe Enterprises, Hardware and Construction Company, one of the first in Kampala. He named it after his village, Zzimwe, in Masaka district.

The family pledged to sustain the company and other businesses.

“Before he died, he had taught us how to work and manage finances. We are ready to maintain the company,” Eng. Moses Ssebyala, who spoke on behalf of the family, said.

Paul, one of Zzimwe’s sons, has been running the family business for years, he added.

Zzimwe is survived by four wives and 19 children.
