A person died on the spot, three others on the way to Iganga Hospital, after their car crashed.

The incident happened on Tuesday at 8:15am, about a kilometre from Busembatia town, on the Tirinyi highway.

An eye-witness said a vehicle sped down the slope after Namalemba trading centre. Shortly after, a loud bang was followed by deafening screams.

“I looked in that direction and saw the car flying in the air then rolling several times on the tarmac before settling in the valley adjacent to Agape Primary School.
“People hurried to help the injured out of the wreckage,” the witness narrated.

According to the witness, several of the occupants’ possessions were thrown out of the vehicle and were scattered in nearby maize and rice fields due to the impact.

Khasule Ogwal, the Iganga district traffic police chief, identified the dead as Richard Muhangi, Richard Lubwama, Fred Ssesonga and Yvonne Rukidi, who had been working with arefilling station in Jinja town.

“The vehicle was travelling from Nateete, a Kampala suburb, to a burial in Mbale. There were nine people in the car,” Ogwal explained.

He attributed the cause of the accident to a tyre burst, caused by speeding.

“Most of the victims are from the same family. They were travelling in the company of two friends,” Ogwal said.

He said Kenneth Kigozi, the driver, Ruth Nalubwama, Gerald Ssali, Ian Kimera and Geoffrey Mukasa had been treated for minor injuries. The injured were transferred to Kampala by relatives for treatment.
