MAKERERE University plans to construct a 20,000-capacity hostel for students residing in private hostelss outside the campus.

The acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, said on Monday that they wanted to improve the security of their students.

The university has nine halls of residence, which can only accommodate 3,000 of its 37,000 students.

Six of the halls, Nsibirwa, Lumumba, Livingstone, University Hall, Mitchell and Nkrumah are for males, while Africa, Mary Stuart and CCE accommodate females.

“We are taking the issue of our students’ security very seriously. We have on several occasions lost students due to errant private security guards and hostels that do not have adequate security. We have identified land to construct hostels on the main campus,” he said.

“We are looking at a partnership with private investors, who will construct hostels on our land, manage them for 40 years, then hand them over to us,” he explained.
