NOT convinced by his defeat to Zimbabwean Jamie Whyte in the KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda rally last weekend, Ponsiano Lwakataka could stretch the battle to Rwanda next month.

Lwakataka believes African champion Whyte would not have beaten him if it were not for the accident that left the 2008 Ugandan national champion’s Subaru N8 without a windscreen for the entire first leg in Luwero.

Lwakataka, who posted the second quickest time but failed to earn points after his car broke down on his way to the finish point in Kampala, is considering entering the KCB Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally scheduled for June 4-6.

“I can tame Whyte in Rwanda and also use the international status of the Rwanda rally to close the gap in the national championship,” Lwakataka said.

The Lion Power energy drink sponsored driver will have to forfeit one national championship event if he wants to score national championship points in a foreign event.

International events come with the benefit of a 40% bonus points.
This would certainly help Lwakataka (100 points) catch up with title rivals Nasser Mutebi with 180 and Ronald Ssebuguzi (140 points).

Being an international competition, the show in Rwanda normally attracts top drivers from various parts of the world.
