How can I treat ring worms?

Dear doctor,
I have failed to treat the ring worms on my skin that have lasted over three years. I have used all sorts of antifungal creams and tablets in vain. Please advise.

Dear Emma,
RING worms are caused by a fungus. This particular fungal infection is much easier to treat before it has spread to several parts of the body.

Most widespread fungal infections require prolonged treatment to eliminate the fungi. This is especially true if the infection involves the scalp.

You may have to take medications for six weeks or more. Not all antifungal medications are effective against this particular infection.

It is, therefore, important that prescriptions are given by qualified medical personnel and not over the counter.

It would be advisable for you to see a skin specialist since it is easier to access one these days. Ask your doctor to refer you to a skin specialist.

Sometimes the infection may be a mixed one which would require additional treatment. There is also a possibility that you are reinfecting yourself with the fungi.

Clothes and other personal items usually act as good reservoirs of the infection.
You need to pay more attention to your laundry and personal items.

This may include soaking your laundry in bleach before washing. Ironing all your clothes also helps to get rid of the fungi.
