TULLOW Oil has announced up to six scholarships for postgraduate courses in oil and gas studies. Officials said the move was in response to the growing need for professionals in the sector.

The scholarships will favour applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds who would otherwise not be able to meet the cost of studying abroad. They are aimed at building capacity of Ugandans to participate in the early phases of oil production as part of the company’s commitment to supplementing government efforts to build long-term training capability for oil and gas skills.

“The growth of the oil and gas sector depends a lot on the professional development invested in it. “It is critical that we prepare more Ugandans to support the sector. Through these scholarships, we are supporting government efforts in developing the sector,” said Jimmy Kiberu, the corporate affairs manager.

He said Tullow is interested in all-inclusive oil development and utilisation experience, which is why they have invested in the local communities.“As we go to production, the industry must bring expatriates with oil and gas technical skills to fast-track oil production,” he said.
