What courses go with BAG/ENT?
I am a student in S.6 taking biology, agriculture, geography and entrepreneurship. What courses do I qualify to do at university? Which institution or university can admit me?
Okot

Vincet Ekwang, a member of the Public Universities Joint Admissions Board, says your subject combination can qualify you for many courses if you pass well. But the choice of the course will depend on your career interests and performance at A’ level. The courses include bachelor of science in horticulture, bachelor of science in agribusiness management, and bachelor of agricultural and rural innovation. You can also be given bachelor of environmental science if you pass both biology and agriculture. You can as well try bachelor of sports science and bachelor of science in speech and language therapy, for which biology is the essential subject.
You can also apply for a bachelors of environmental management, tourism, library and information science, and records and archives management, which do not have special essential subjects.

Biotechnology is used in cheese production, brewing, waste water management, drug design and gene therapy. Dr. Ssettumba Mukasa, a Makerere University senior lecturer in biotechnology, says a university qualification in biotechnology would lead you to career paths in pharmaceutical companies (drug design and development or pharmaceutical production); chemical companies, agriculture (plant breeding and engineering), diagnostics companies (diagnostic test design and production), legal and consulting companies (business plan analyst), government agencies, and research with research institutes, universities or in industry. You can apply at Quality Chemicals Industries, Kampala Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, National Agricultural Research Organisation, government ministries like that of agriculture and universities like Makerere.

Can I do civil engineering?
Can I be admitted for civil engineering with 23 points in physics, economics, mathematics and technical drawing? Is chemistry one of the essentials?
Debbie N.

Physics and mathematics are the essential subjects for the bachelor of civil and building engineering at Kyambogo University. James Bulenzibuto, the university’s publicist, says you stand a chance to be admitted if you scored principal passes in the two subjects.
Technical drawing, chemistry and economics are among the relevant subjects, meaning your chances for being admitted are higher if you passed any of them.
To compete favourably at Makerere, however, you ought to have passed chemistry because chemistry, physics and mathematics are considered first as the essential, but also the relevant subjects for the university’s bachelor of science in civil engineering.
Alfred Namoah, Makerere’s academic registrar, says your chance of being admitted will depend on the number of applicants.

Am I eligible for medicine?
I completed a diploma in Orthopedics from Mulago Paramedical School and passed well. However, I had performed poorly at A’ level with seven points (4OOOD) in physics, chemistry, biology and fine art. Walugembe Kiggala

Fatumah Nakatudde, Makerere’s deputy academic registrar in charge of the college of health sciences, says you are eligible for admission since Mulago Paramedical School is an accredited institution of higher learning. Your A’ level results won’t affect you.
However, Nakatudde says you must possess at least a second class or credit diploma in order to apply. She also warns that the course you want (Bachelor of medicine) is highly competitive.

I applied for a bachelor of engineering in environmental engineering at Kyambogo University but do not understand it well. Please tell me more about it.

To be admitted for the course at Kyambogo University, one must have principal passes in physics and mathematics. Dr. Daudi Mugisa, the dean of the faculty of engineering, says environmental engineers carry out equipment designs that meet environmental legislation and standards; carry out environmental impact assessments and audits; manage waste disposal and discharge and treatment processes; and engage in research to control emissions, heavy metal and solid waste disposal and effluent discharges into water bodies from work places. Graduates can also work as district environment officers.

I scored only one principal pass
I scored six points with one principal pass (3FOFC) in physics, chemistry, biology and agriculture. My dream has been to pursue a diploma in education with agriculture. Will I be admitted for this course since I got one principal pass?
Lydia

One principal pass is the minimum entry requirement for diploma courses in NTCs, according to Phenny Birungi, the assistant executive director of the National Council for Higher Education.
This means you are eligible for admission in any NTC.
However, being admissible does not guarantee you a vacancy; some institutions may deny you a place depending on the number of applicants.
