FELIX Lubega is one of 20 players named for the national rugby sevens squad to start preparing for the Commonwealth Games due in October in New Delhi, India.

The Uganda Rugby Union yesterday named the team with the selection committee satisfied that Lubega, who underwent surgery on both his knees last year and early this year, is fit for competitive rugby.

Announcing the team, coach John Musoke said that a number of experienced players would also be considered at a later stage.

Timothy Mudola, Simon Wakabi and Allan Musoke, who were part of the 2006 team at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, are not on the team.

“We all know Musoke, Wakabi and Mudola are experienced players, but the door is not yet closed and we may consider them in the final twelve,” Musoke stated.

The coach noted that sevens rugby had changed a lot that is why the selectors considered speed, strength, size and continuity by having both experience and youth on the team.

The team that start training on Sunday at Kyadondo club includes Joel Anguyo, Ambrose Kamanyire, Lawrence Wakabi (Kobs), Mathias Ochwo, Scot Olwoch, Benon Kiiza, Michael Wokorach, Jude Keremundu and Robert Seguya (Heathens).

Others are John Bosco Semakula (Impis) Moses Soita, Timothy Ddumba, Dan Chanowira, Tobias Senkima (Pirates), Andrew Olweny, Ambrose Kakuru (Mongers); while Lenny Kikonyogo, Ronald Mussajja and Francis Odong are from Rhinos.
