YOU should not have sex a day before a live performance,” was only part of the week long lesson that the third annual Bayimba festival of arts taught the artistes in Gulu. The advice came from a veteran musician, Julie Ssessanga.

For the first time in three years, the Bayimba Festival is holding workshops and gigs in different regions. UK-based artiste and producer Kaz Kasozi took artistes through the skills they need to successfully perform at a live concert.

The result was shown at a show at TAKS Centre on Saturday. It was interesting to watch the Bwola dance that is central to the highly acclaimed movie, War Dance.

Samuel Dantons Ariiho, a drummer won himself the chance to play with the Blood Brothers Band after the band’s members saw his craft. Susan Kerunen, the Blood Brothers, AK Simba and Joel Sebunjo and Sundiata band were the Kampala-based artistes who performed.

The upcountry performers were Alpha Otim, Peace Pamela, Simple Man, Justin Okello and Brother Martin.

The traditional dances were performed by Asanti African Children’s Company, Can Opwonya and Ken Kwaro Acholi groups. Next month, the Bayimba Festival mini-festival will go to Mbale.
