THE northern division of Kabale municipality has formed a vigilante group to help the Police keep law and order in Rutooma and Kijuguta wards where robberies have become rampant.

A group of 35 volunteer vigilantes were on Tuesday commissioned after training.
The resident district commissioner, Cox Nyakairu, who officiated at the commissioning, challenged the group to be exemplary in executing their duties.

He said no meaningful development can take place unless the security of people and their property is guaranteed.

He lamented that most developmental programmes in the district such as the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) and Prosperity-for-All have lagged behind due to poor security, which he blamed mostly on unemployed youth.

The district Police commander, Sam Ssebambulide, assured the group of his support. He added that they stand a chance of joining the Force if they performed well.
He urged the group to guard government property such as signposts on highways.
He pledged to set up more Police posts in the division.

TheLC3 chairman, Happiness Kyokwijuka, said similar groups have been formed in Upper Bugongi and Lower Bugongi wards to fight drug abuse, thefts and prostitution.
