MULAGO Hospital has dismissed reports of baby thefts at their maternity and labour wards.

In a press statement yesterday, the hospital executive director, Dr. Edward Ddumba, clarified that no newly-born babies had been stolen from the hospital.

“Those making allegations of theft of newly-born babies at Mulago have the intent to slander the hospital,” he said.

Ddumba added that the hospital and the Police had investigated and found no truth in the allegations made by three women.

He explained that Nasita Namugga of Ssisa sub-county in Wakiso district, who reported to have delivered twins at Mulago on July 10, 2009, had delivered only one baby, who was handed to her.

The three nursing officers, Sarah Kitiibwa Kabenge, Agnes Gimbo, and Harriet Namusobya, who were implicated in the case, had been cleared by the crime investigations department and the resident state attorney.

Claire Nuru Namatovu, another woman claiming to have delivered twins on January 7, 2010, was not pregnant at the time. She was tried and sentenced for spreading false information, Ddumba pointed out.

Rehema Nakuya, who also claimed to have delivered twins on June 1, 2009, delivered one baby who was handed to her, he said.

Ddumba added that Nakuya used a fake ultra sound scan report, in which the image of the foetus was frozen twice to give the impression that there were two babies.

The New Vision was unable to trace the women for a comment.
