THE parliamentary finance committee wants an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of sh217m in Lira Women Cooperative Savings and Credit Society (SACCO).

The committee found out that over 97,600 members had never benefited from the Prosperity-For-All scheme. It also heard that several groups received less money than the loans approved by authorities.

The committee, which was meeting the resident district commissioner, Joan Pacoto, at the district headquarters on Saturday, was concluding an assessment of the effectiveness of SACCOs in the district.

According to Pacoto, women from six sub-counties contributed money to the group, part of which was allegedly mismanaged by the former group chairperson, Dolly Omolo.

Omolo allegedly admitted that sh30m got lost during the implementation of their activities. Recently, President Yoweri Museveni, while on the National Agricultural Advisory Services sensitisation tour in Lango, promised to pay the sh30m to the members.

However, Omolo has dragged Pacoto to court for allegedly removing her from office illegally.

Last week, the case was heard at the Lira High Court. After the hearing, Pacoto was physically confronted by Omolo, who now faces charges of assault. She was remanded to Lira Central Prison.

Meeting women in Barr sub-county, Kabando Tindamanyire, the committee chairperson, who also sits on the parliamentary public accounts committee, assured the victims that their findings and recommendations would be presented to Parliament.

SACCOs are funded by the Ministry of Finance.
