Steak out: Good food but better for a night out

I have had nothing but grief since I made the mistake last week of saying that Cayenne is in Bugolobi and not in Bukoto where it actually is. But since I have now corrected myself, please adjust yourselves, too and let’s get to this week’s review.

It was quite a surprise to learn that Steak Out actually existed even in the daytime. A notorious night-spot, a favourite of the fresh and funky nightfall freaks, the bar and restaurant serves more famously as a bar than as a restaurant.

On a successful night you will find it full of punters dancing and drinking and trying to hook up with each other to do naughty things.

I knew that it opens even during the day to serve lunch, but it was still a shock. Like I expected not to find Steak Out there. It was as if I expected Steak Out to still be in bed nursing a hangover.

Well, the establishment was not bright-eyed and bushytailed, sprightly and full of energy. The general ambience was subdued and dull.

At night you do not notice, because the place is happening, but the harsh light of the afternoon sun shows cracks and stains and mildew and bits of creeping decrepitude here and there.

The seating on the veranda is nicely cushioned, those who party at Steak Out on it’s many theme nights will know, and so it was nice to be able to lean back and stretch after our heavy meals, which I shall discuss in a second.

First the service. The least bright-eyed and bushy-tailed aspect of Steak Out at Lunch. The waiter seemed to be saving his energy for the evening, I guess.

And when he eventually brought our meals (I had a steak fillet for sh13,000, and my guest had baked pork chops sh10,500) as he laid them before us, he could not seem to tell which one was which.

In the end, though the food was very good and the meals were thrilling and the comfy sofas were even more comfy after eating.

Steak Out is better for a night out than it is for a lunch, but the food is good enough to make me recommend that next time you go for Rock Night, try the pork chops.
