CHOICE of music, ability to entertain the crowd, a knack for maintaining harmony when mixing several songs, and creativity on the turn-table. Those are some of the key qualities the judges considered when determining who was to attend the Grand Finale of the Pilsner Spinmaster DJ Contest.

The event at Steak Out Bar last Saturday was the first semi-final of the contest. The Grand Finale is slated for June 2 at the Kyadondo Rugby Grounds and the overall winner will walk away with sh5m and other prizes. At the end of the night, six out of 12 DJs had qualified for the Grand Finale. These included DJ Switch, DJ Mark, DJ Mercy, DJ Aluda, DJ Tony and DJ Cedric. They will represent Kampala region at the finals, where they will battle it with six other finalists each the northern, eastern, western and central regions at the finals.

The six qualified after showcasing their spinning prowess to the revellers. It was easy to impress the revellers since they had already been excited by the lively Champions League final.

Yet the crowd still did not tolerate mediocrity. They ecstatically ululated if contestants were good at their craft but booed and yelled insults at the poor ones. They even asked the second rate competitors to leave the podium.

That in turn meant the judges (Radio One’s RS Elvis, DJ Bush Baby, DJs Mary and Tony from the Platinum DJs) would have their work cut out for them. The crowd made the decisions.

All the judges did was to give comments and pronounce those who had excelled, but they also had to prove their worth.

After the show, the judges showcased some of their skills leaving us satisfied that they were worth sitting on that bench.

The spinning competition was spiced up by performances from Raba Daba and Empress.

The Pilsner Spin Master contest is an annual competition that seeks to find the best of DJ talent that has not yet gone professional on the big stage. This year’s edition has been running over the last three months.
