Margaret Tandekwire, a skin specialist at Pearl Royal Salon on Rwenzori House, Kampala says: “As we grow, our skin cells are born, grow, die and are replaced.†She says this is because the cells on the surface become dry, unhealthy and more elastic. “The skin therefore becomes less firm, rough and loses its resilience.â€
She explains that though wrinkles are due to inherited genes, which determine how one’s face and body respond to the aging process, premature wrinkles are caused by factors like harsh weather conditions. Ultraviolet rays penetrate and destroy the skin cells. In the process of defending itself, the skin darkens and develops wrinkles.
Stress and poor diet affect every part of the body, including the skin. Rapid weight loss is another factor that causes wrinkles. The volume of the fat cells (which have a cushioning effect) drastically reduce, causing the skin to sag and crease.
Remedies Though wrinkles are part and parcel of the ageing process, no woman wants to look older. To slow down or prevent premature wrinkles, the tips below will give you wonderful results.
