Does reflexology treat numb feet?

BURNING sensations in the feet of people living with HIV (PLHIV), also known as peripheral neuropathy, can be a result of the disease or a side-effect of drugs like Stavudine, part of the Triomune you were taking.

Face HIV with Dr Watiti

Dear Doctor,
I have been on Triomune which has just been changed to Combivir and Efavirenz because I was feeling burning sensations plus numbness in my feet. The problem has, however, failed to go away. Would reflexology which is widely being advertised help me overcome this problem or might it be harmful to me?

BURNING sensations in the feet of people living with HIV (PLHIV), also known as peripheral neuropathy, can be a result of the disease or a side-effect of drugs like Stavudine, part of the Triomune you were taking.

However, diseases such as diabetes cause peripheral neuropathy if not controlled. You need proper diagnosis of what might be the cause of the problem. Many people with peripheral neuropathy as a side-effect of drugs, get relief when the offending drug is withdrawn if the damage done to the nerves was not extensive.

Some get relief from aromatherapy or treatment with aromatic oils or reflexology. I do not see any harm in using such remedies to bring relief but claims that aromatherapy or reflexology cures the condition, especially when nerves have been terminally damaged, may not be true.
