MARTIN Toroitich recovered from a hitch in the final stages to finish second in the International Abraham Rosa 10km race in Puerto Rico on Sunday.
The position came with a cash prize of sh8m, a good reward for enduring heavy rains and a muddy course. Toroitich mistakenly followed a press truck on a wrong turn, but managed to return to the route in time to sprint to the podium.
“I was in the lead pack and we thought that we were following the lead car.
We realised after about 100 metres and I sprinted from sixth position but Sammy (Kitwe) was already far ahead,†said Toroitich just moments after the race.
He was followed home by two Ethiopians Terefe Maregu (29:42) and renowned long distance runner Abreham Cherkos. Defending champion Kitwe clocked 29 minutes 26 seconds to win.
“The rain washed away the marks. It was quite heavy. It is good that I finished in a respectable position. I am sure it will even be better next year,†he said.
