THE Uganda Cranes plan to counter Kenya in Sunday’s explosive Africa Nations Championship fixture with a high-tempo attacking strategy.

The team that departs on Friday, will be buoyed on by hundreds of Ugandan fans intending to travel for the encounter.

Coach Robert ‘Bobby’ Williamson took his charges through the paces yesterday in an endurance test.

“The idea is to help us be fast on the counter and with efficiency,” skipper Simeon Masaba stated after the hasty sessions that left him and his teammates jaded.

Williamson is well aware that the return fixture will not be a game for the fainthearted.
He already intends to stick with his 4-3-3 formation with virtually the same personnel.

Although some may argue that the temptation to be cautious could be there, Masaba, just like Williamson, is convinced that at times being too cautious plays into the hands of the opposition.

“There will be a balance as to when we attack and defend. We will not sit back. They (Kenya) will have to be prepared to work hard in trying to contain us because we will equally look for that goal that should kill the game off,” Masaba added.

Kenya has also beefed up their squad ahead of the clash, adds Reuben Olita.

Sofapaka striker John Baraza and Tusker FC’s Paul Were have been included in the team.

Humphrey Mieno, James Situma and Edgar Ochieng, who missed the first leg owing to the CECAFA Club Championships that ended in Kigali on Sunday are also in the squad.

Team manager, Joe Birgen said the inclusion of the five is meant to boost their chances of overturning the Kampala deficit and booking a ticket for the finals.

“Reversing the Kampala results is a huge task for us but we are hoping the Sofapaka players will rise up to the occasion and upset the formbook,” the manager said.

All that the Cranes now have to do is craft a draw or better still win to guarantee automatic qualification for the tournament due in Sudan next year.
