University exams on sabbath?

I write in response to Eric Tumwesigye’s (Ag. Assistant Registrar, Makerere University) letter in The New Vision of May 26, in which he says sitting exams on the Sabbath is not a sin. Observing the sabbath is one of the 10 commandments of God that must be kept with diligence.

It is a day of rest from all our labours; a day of happiness and joy. Yes, a Christian is to do good on Sabbath as well quoted by Tumwesigye. However, he misses a point when he compares a patient or someone dying with doing exams on Sabbath.

One cannot wait to take the sick or those dying to hospital because they could lose their lives if not attended to. On the Sabbath, the Lord wants us to help those in need, pray for and visit the sick, share testimonies and uplift one another spiritually.

But exams can wait and be done on other days of the week. In your capacity as a God-fearing Christian and a senior university official, why can’t you review the university’s policy of sitting exams on Sabbath?

We are not extremists as you say, but obedient to God’s command.
