MORE than 16,000 students who applied for private sponsorship at Makerere and Kyambogo universities will miss admission.
The two universities can admit only 24,000 students out of nearly 40,000 applicants. The closing date for both universities is Monday.
Makerere University is planning to admit 16,973, but by yesterday morning they had received 20,400 applications, hours before the deadline. Kyambogo will admit only 8,000 students out of nearly 20,000 who had applied by yesterday.
The Makerere deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa said more applicants were expected before the closure of the process. “We shall soon select those that can be admitted to the university on private sponsorship,†she explained.
At Kyambogo University the senior assistant registrar in-charge of admissions, Teddy Tumukunde, said “there are so many students who are submitting their applications. This implies that by Monday, we might be having about 20,000 applicants.â€
The new academic year begins in August this year.
Makerere this year increased its private intake by 4,200 students, compared to an increase of 1,000 in Kyambogo University.
This implies the number of students who could have missed joining these two universities has been reduced. But, it has still not solved the problem completely. Some students will still miss being admitted on private sponsorship this year.
About 4,000 students have already been admitted on Government scholarships in the five public universities, for the next academic year.
