YOU have landed this job you have always dreamt about. But the tricky part is that you don’t know how to conduct yourself at the new workplace to make the other employees like you.

How do you make that first step into the hearts of your boss and co-workers?
• Be careful with humour. Avoid joking carelessly with people you are not well used to. Bad jokes can be very offensive.

• Be on time for work. This is the first step in creating a good first impression. Always factor in an allowance for possible delays in traffic or taking a wrong turn.

• Present yourself appropriately. Know what is appropriate for your new workplace. Dress professionally and learn its traditions and norms.

• Give attention to your personal grooming. Have a good haircut or shave. Make sure your clothes are clean and tidy. The make-up should be neat and not overdone. Appropriate dressing makes you more confident and calm.

• Wear a winner’s smile. A warm and confident smile will put both you and the other person at ease.

It portrays you as one who is easy to get along with. However, do not overdo it because you may end up appearing insincere.

• Be open and confident. Body language speaks louder than words. Use your body language to project confidence and assurance.

• To make the first impression stick, the right body language and appearance are key. Stand tall, smile, make eye contact, and greet with a firm handshake.

• Be Courteous and Attentive. Being attentive, polite, courteous and displaying good manners helps make a good impression.

Be Positive in your attitude. Even in the face of criticism or nervousness, positive attitude helps make a good first impression. Maintain an upbeat manner and smile.
