KENYA Police on Saturday night arrested a Ugandan woman with cocaine worth Ksh85 million (sh2.2b).Anne Birungi Bisaso was nabbed by the narcotic police at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, with the consignment wrapped in two United Nations Development Programme bags.

The Nairobi provincial criminal investigations officer, Joseph Ngiza, said Bisaso was helping the Police with the investigations to unravel the mystery surrounding the big consignment.

Ngiza boss said the consignment was headed to Entebbe International Airport. The officer said upon interrogation, Bisaso gave contradicting confessions that she worked with the United Nations and Uganda’s foreign affairs ministry.

Both the foreign affairs and UNDP officials in Kampala said they did not know her.

Research has established that Kenya and Uganda are the leading conduits for the banned drug, whose use affects the way a person thinks, acts and feels.

Kenya Police believe the banned drugs originated from Brazil in South America, through South Africa, en route to Uganda.

Last month, an Angolan business woman was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission for allegedly trafficking pure grade cocaine weighing about one kilogramme.

Maria Silva, aged 39, was arrested at the Lusaka International Airport on arrival from Brazil, aboard a South African Airways flight. Silva allegedly concealed the cocaine in her sports shoes and bra.

According to the Kenyan law, the maximum sentence for drug trafficking upon conviction, is life imprisonment. The minimum is 12 years.
