Ask the doctor with Dr Gloria Ndagire
Dear Doctor,
I am aged 30 but think I am becoming bald. I am not sure why. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Dear Jack,
YOU could be experiencing male pattern baldness. Most men have the potential to go bald. However, this can occur in males as young as 20.
With advancing age, the male sexual hormone testosterone is gradually converted into another form known as dihydrotestesterone. This derivative of the male hormone has a negative effect on hair growth.
It gradually slows down hair growth, producing weaker and shorter hair. With time, this may result into complete hair loss.
Baldness is usually received negatively because it is associated with loss of vitality and energy. It is also thought that one becomes less attractive. However, this is not necessarily true. Just maintain a positive self-image.
There is a drug that has been approved for use in cases like yours. It blocks the enzyme responsible for the hair loss. However, you need to first discuss this with your physician for advice. Another more radical measure is a hair transplant.
