“Few women can afford different outfits for every occasion they are invited to. But by wisely selecting their clothes and accessories, they can make what they have suit different dress codes,†says Sarah Bakka, the proprietor of the Simply Fashion Boutique.
Here, Bakka, along with Harriet Kiganda of the Cinci Co, (a boutique on Kamu Kamu Plaza) give tips on how to shop for multi-purpose outfits.
“Begin by looking into your closet and then shop for items that compliment the shoes, bags, jewellery or dresses that you have. Say you have a pair of red shoes, you might want choose to buy red earrings, a red clutch or a red necklace to compliment them.†It is essential to know which colours compliment each other. Red goes well with black; black with white and silver with blue,†says Kiganda.
Bakka also adds that one should choose clothes that are timeless. Obviously, the little black dress is a must-have because it flatters all body shapes. Dark-coloured maxi dresses can be adapted for different occasions by choosing different accessories, such as scarves, belts and jewellery. One might also want to buy a stylish black jacket, either of knee-length or floor length. It can accent any type of formal party wear and it is appropriate for outdoor evening parties.
You could get floral prints because they can be teamed with many accessories. But Bakka advises that one should steer clear of bold floral prints or bright-coloured ones because they are conspicuous and are more so exaggerated by accessories.
Kiganda advises that one should choose versatile styles. For example, one can invest in a pair of good leather black pumps because they can be worn everywhere. Select a three-inch heel for maximum versatility.
Strapless dresses also look chic, lending themselves to many different occasions. They can be worn with a scarf or on their own. Go for long, high-slit as they can look formal but striking at the same time.
