UMEME’S request to charge a flat rate for domestic consumers will take centre stage at a public hearing to discuss the issue on Wednesday at the Imperial Royale Hotel.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) in a recent statement, said the public would be given a chance to express their views, after which the body will reach a decision on whether to grant UMEME’s request or not. “We will hold a public hearing regarding UMEME’s application for a flat rate tariff for domestic consumers.

“All stakeholders and affected persons wishing to make presentations will be given a chance to do so,” the statement said.

John Wandera, the ERA publicist, castigated consumers who do not take interest in the process of tariff review.

“Up to today, there are Ugandans who do not know the current price of electricity, as announced in January 2010.

“Licences issued to electricity utilities have provisions for review of tariffs,” he said.

He said following a successful review process that climaxed into a public hearing last December, the ERA board considered the applications and approved tariffs for the period of January to March 2010.

Charlotte Kemigyisha, the UMEME corporate communications manager, declined to comment.
