Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao has branded the Inter-Party Coalition an FDC project aimed at erasing the identities of other political organisations. Mao said FDC was using the coalition to build its own base of support at the expense of other political parties.
“At the beginning of the coalition, we kept telling them to make changes in the protocol but they refused. “That protocol needs a comprehensive surgery but the FDC are adamant whenever this matter is raised. We opted to shun them. We shall not go into forced marriage,†Mao said on Saturday.
He was addressing a rally at Nakivubo Blue Primary School. DP Members of Parliament and leaders, apart from Erias Lukwago and Betty Nambooze, attended the rally.
Mao said the coalition protocol requires the presidential candidate to carry the flag of his own party until 2016 when the cooperation expires. He wondered what the fate of other parties would be.
Mao attacked the party coalition over hosting the breakaway faction led by Reiner Kafiire and Dr. Bayiga Lulume, who plan to join. He also attacked President Museveni over the closure of CBS radio station, saying it was Museveni’s plan to disrupt the flow of information so that he can divide and rule.
Mao said he would mobilise DP youth to counter the ‘Kibooko Squad’, which he said was being used by the Police to suppress the opposition. The party’s national council, sitting at Bukesa on Friday, also seconded the position announced by the DP executive last month that they will field Mao as their presidential candidate in the 2011 elections.
The party is open to cooperation in areas of parliamentary and local council elections, Mao said.
