Karimojong spiritualists have been urged to discourage the youth from raiding cattle.

“The spiritualists contribute a lot towards cattle thefts because the youth approach them for fortune forecasts before venturing into raids,” the Kaabong resident district commissioner (RDC), Robert Okello, said.

He made the remarks during a Kotido-Kaabong inter district peace dialogue held at Toroi village in Loyoro sub-county, Kaabong district, on Saturday.

Okello said the spiritualists would help re-shape the youth because they are accorded a lot of respect.

He explained that the fortune tellers command more respect from the youth than their fathers because they believe in them.

Without giving statistics, the RDC said the number of youths dying during cattle raids was alarmingly high.

Okello asked the youth to hand over their guns to the army.

The Bishop of Karamoja Diocese, the Rt. Rev. James Nasak, asked the army to recover the stolen animals because they were the source of the increasing violence.

After the function, the kraal leaders and spiritualists sealed their commitment for peace by washing their hands using herbs and promising to discipline youth who defy the peace.
