Sixteen couples from the Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mbale campus were married on Saturday in a mass wedding at the university’s Buwalasi campus in Sironko district.
The couples included teaching and support staff reports Paul Watala. Bishop Daniel Gimadu of Mbale North diocese who officiated the wedding, appealed to the communities, other institutions and staff to emulate UCU.
The function was attended by several Anglican bishops from different parts of the country. Gimadu also baptised two couples, who converted from the Roman Catholic faith to the Anglican Church, while 15 couples were also confirmed.
He said some of the staff have been living in traditional marriage relationships for over 25 years. The bishop added that it was wise for them to also get married in church.
Gimadu said it was the first time the Anglican Church in the region held a mass wedding for staff from the institution. The bishop appealed to the couples to be faithful to their spouses.
The campus’ spokesperson, Sandra Amollo, denied claims that the mass wedding was part of the qualification to secure the jobs at the university.
