JINJA Hospital is out of blood, the superintendent, Dr. Christine Ondoa, has said.
“We are in crisis. Whenever we receive patients in need of blood, we refer them to Mulago Hospital because we cannot handle the situation,†Ondoa said.
She also reported that the National Medical Stores (NMS) delays to provide them with drugs.
“This is a referral hospital which caters for Busoga and its neighbouring districts of Buikwe, Kayunga and part of Mukono. It handles different categories of ailments, but NMS does its delivery work at a slow pace, putting patients in need of drugs at risk,†Ondoa noted.
She was meeting the district social service committee on Tuesday.
The committee was investigating the complaints raised by the public against the hospital’s health workers.
It comprised the district health officer, Dr. Chris Wagoloire, the district principal nursing officer, Sr. Joyce Isiko, and councillors, led by the chairperson, Simon Muyanga.
Muyanga said the public had complained of misconduct and bad attitude towards patients.
In response, Ondoa said: “It is true they are rude, but at times it is an attitude problem which is hard for them to change immediately. But we are trying to do so through training and counselling.â€
She urged the Government to improve the welfare of health workers to avoid brain drain.
The committee also learnt that the hospital was understaffed.
