Vision Group gets new chief editor

BARBARA Kaija is the new Editor-in-Chief for the Vision Group.The board of directors agreed that Kaija, hitherto the deputy Editor-in-Chief, takes over the position, which fell vacant after Els de Termmerman’s departure in April.
The company chief executive officer, Robert Kabushenga, announced the board’s decision to staff on Tuesday at the head office in Kampala.
The excited staff, several groomed by Kaija, applauded as Kabushenga announced Kaija’s two-year contract. He said Kaija has the professional skills and experience to lead the editorial team in informing, educating and entertaining the public.
Yesterday, Kaija remarked, “I take on the appointment of Editor-in-Chief at The New Vision, aware that it is an immense responsibility and I owe it to our audiences, to the company, my country and to the almighty God to put in all my best.
“All of us at The New Vision have a contract with our audiences to serve efficiently through continuous editorial innovations. We shall focus on improving our professional skills so as to maintain high journalistic standards and at the same time meet the varying audience needs. We promise to deliver great editorial practices,†she said.
Kaija’s journey to the current position began in 1992 when she joined The New Vision as a sub-editor trainee. She had earlier been a high school teacher and head teacher.
She quickly rose through the ranks as sub-editor in-charge of various sections, deputy features editor and features editor, a position she held for eight years until 2006 when she was appointed deputy Editor-in-Chief,
Kaija holds a masters degree in journalism and media studies from Rhodes University, South Africa, a post-graduate diploma in practical journalism from the Thompson Foundation in Cardiff in the UK. She is also a fellow of the 2007 International Journalism Exchange Programme in the US.
Other qualifications include a bachelor of arts degree in education and a masters in education, both awarded by Makerere University.
