MUFTI Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje is still in office, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) secretary general, Eng. Siraje Kavuma, has said.

“There have been numerous media reports that he (Mubajje) has been sacked. The council dissociates itself from all these statements,” Kavuma said.

Kavuma was addressing district khadis yesterday at Old Kampala on the state of affairs at the council.

However, Mubajje did not attend the meeting and Kavuma did not disclose details of his whereabouts.

Kavuma denied receiving any petition calling for the impeachment of the Mufti.
He said council chairman Hassan Basajjabalaba had been suspended following a petition against him.

Kavuma explained that Basajjabalaba had failed to defend himself against accusations of using the council to do personal business when he appeared before the Joint Session, chaired by the Mufti.

The Joint Session is the second organ of the council, made up of the executive and the college of sheikhs.
The Joint Session members resolved to uphold the earlier suspension, until the general assembly discusses Basajjabalaba’s fate.

The standoff between Mubajje and Basajjabalaba came to public attention on June 14 when Basajjabalaba announced that he had suspended Mubajje over conducting himself in a manner unbefitting of Islamic principles.
A week ago, Mubajje convened the Joint Session, which resolved to uphold Basajjabalaba’s suspension.

Simultaneously, Basajjabalaba also held a meeting at Sam Sam Hotel in Mengo, which resolved to suspend Mubajje.

The council vice-chairman, Hajji Ahmed Wadrif, admitted yesterday that they had not officially communicated Mubajje’s suspension to the council.
He said they would write to Mubajje on Saturday when the general assembly meets again.
