DISTRICT officials in the Busoga region have urged the Government to increase the sh10,400 fees paid per term for each child to ensure proper implementation of the UPE programme.

DISTRICT officials in the Busoga region have urged the Government to increase the sh10,400 fees paid per term for each child to ensure proper implementation of the UPE programme.

The officials said this during a meeting with commissioners investigating the mismanagement of UPE/USE funds. The meeting took place in the Jinja district council hall on Monday.

Jinja Municipality principal education officer, Jonathan Kamwana, said: “The value for money has changed and, therefore, that amount cannot meet the utility costs in UPE schools.”

He told the commission headed by Justice Ezekiel Muhanguzi that in some schools in Jinja, the figure had been revised to sh25,000 with the consent of parents and this was helping those schools pay their utility bills.

During the same meeting, Justice Muhanguzi said his inquiry is aimed at assessing the performance of the UPE programme after which a report of the findings will be presented to the relevant officials to make necessary recommendations.
