LOCAL government minister Adolf Mwesige has summoned the councillors of the new Agago district for a meeting on Thursday to decide on the location of the district headquarters.

Agago was curved out of Pader district.

Two camps have emerged, one known as Agago L-shape, made up of councillors from Kalongo, Paimol, Parabongo, Wol and Omiya-Pacwa sub-counties, who want the headquarters to be located in Kalongo town or in Lukole sub-county.

The other camp referred to as Agago straight-line, comprising councillors of Adilang, Lukole, Patongo, Kot-Omor, Omot, Arum, Lira-Palwo and Lumiyo sub-counties, want the district headquarters to be set up in Patongo town.

According to Joel Ogal, the district LC5 councillor for Lapono sub-county, who is also aspiring to become the interim chairman of the district, Mwesige wants the councillors to decide on the location of the headquarters without causing conflict.

“We hope to resolve the issue when we meet the minister next week,” Ogal said.

He added that the councillors were also pushing for the creation of Agago North county to be made up of the sub-counties that make up Agago L-shape, and Agago South county comprising sub-counties that form Agago straight-line.

Ogal said Patongo town council has good facilities, adding that it is the best location for the district headquarters.

Pader district chairman Peter Odok W’Ocheng wrote to the local government minister proposing that the headquarters be located at Alungar village in Lukole sub-county, which is in the centre of the district, to avoid confusion.

“We shall vote before the local government minister if we fail to agree on where the headquarters should be,” Ogal said, adding that 19 councillors will travel to Kampala for the meeting.
