AFTER missing the league title last season due to coach-players disagreement, Bunamwaya took advantage of a turbulent season among the traditional giant teams to clinch their first major title – the Uganda Super League trophy.

The success that has come with continental football – CAF Champions League next season as Uganda’s flag bearer can also be attributed to their financial power, administrative and player discipline.

The champions of the 34 year old competition will be crowned at a low key function when the dethroned URA FC handover the trophy after a double header at Namboole on Saturday. Bunamwaya will play URA FC while Express take on SC Villa.

For the second time running, FUFA will crown the champion with only a trophy and medals because they failed to secure a sponsor for the league.

It is not a surprise that Bunamwaya, who arrived in the top flight soccer five years ago, steadily improved their game on the road to achieve success. Their first season in 2006 had them fight relegation.

The second year saw them among the top ten, were third last season before winning this season.

“We should have won the trophy last year but our internal problems let us down. So we are not surprised it has come this year,” club secretary Haruna Kyobe said yesterday.

During the 2008/09 pre-season the club launched a deliberate move to massively recruit strikers Caesar Okhuti, Tony Odur, Ronald Muganga, Yuda Mugalu, defender Julius Mulindwa and midfield kingpin Owen Kasule, who were regular with Cranes.

Assistant team coach Richard Wasswa attributed the club’s success to a series of well laid out targets for coaches, players and administrators.

Bunamwaya is among the few clubs like URA and Simba that have always paid their players on time.

Wasswa believes the team will even get better when they shift their home ground to the newly constructed Kitende stadium in Wakiso district.
